               Which               team               is               the               beast               of               the               East?

One               of               the               greatest               rivalries               in               all               of               sports               is               the               legendary               Red               Sox-Yankees               debate.

Since               1969               when               the               American               League               was               split               up               into               two               divisions,               thus               creating               the               A.L.

East               the               Red               Sox               and               Yankees               have               done               their               best               to               rule               the               roost.
               During               the               past               41               seasons               the               Yankees               have               finished               first               or               second               25               times               and               the               Red               Sox               have               done               the               first               or               second               scenario               21               times.

The               breakdown               looks               like               this.

The               Red               Sox               and               Yankees               have               finished               right               behind               each               other               in               first               or               second               place               14               times               including               a               span               of               eight               seasons               in               a               row               from               1998               through               2005.
               The               Yankees               have               16               first               place               finishes               and               9               second               place               finishes               since               the               1969               season.

The               Red               Sox               finished               first               6               times               and               second               15               times               during               that               same               span.
               The               Baltimore               Orioles               were               the               team               to               beat               back               then               as               they               won               the               A.L.

East               in               five               of               the               first               six               years.

The               Red               Sox               battled               to               a               third               place               finish               in               1969               while               the               Yankees               were               an               after               thought               finishing               fifth.
               After               the               last               baseball               strike               that               wiped               out               the               1994               post-season               when               Major               League               Baseball               split               the               two               circuits               into               three               divisions               creating               the               wild               card               anomaly               the               Sox-Yanks               dynasty               really               took               hold.

East               has               been               a               two               team               race               between               the               Red               Sox               and               the               Yankees.

The               wild               card               team               has               come               out               of               the               East               13               times,               7               times               by               the               Red               Sox,               4               times               by               the               Yankees               and               one               each               for               Baltimore               and               Tampa               Bay.
               The               Red               Sox               have               finished               first               twice               in               the               17               year               span               and               second               10               times.

The               Yankees               have               12               first               place               finishes               and               4               second               place               showings               and               the               two               teams               have               been               one               and               two               12               times.
               Recently               Tampa               Bay               has               thrown               their               hat               in               the               mix               with               two               first               place               finishes               and               one               second               place               in               the               last               four               seasons.

The               Red               Sox               have               fallen               off               the               pace               landing               back-to-back               third               place               finishes               in               the               last               two               seasons.
               But               if               history               has               anything               to               say               about               this               rivalry               the               2007               World               Series               Champion               Red               Sox               and               the               2009               World               Series               Champion               Yankees               will               assume               their               rightful               positions               in               the               A.L.

East               this               season               in               a               down               to               the               wire               finish               for               the               top               two               spots.
