Syble Townsel's blog ::Globe: Sox Planning To Add Andrew Miller To Rotation
One of the more overlooked pieces of the Boston Red Sox success during their 2004 and 2007 World Series Championship seasons was the compatibility and success of their bullpen pieces. Keith Faulk and Jonathan Papelbon served as the closers for those squads, but it was often Mike Timlin, Alan Embree, and Hideki Okajima who got the crucial outs to setup these victories. While there are many reasons the Red Sox lacked success in the 2012 season, it was the back end of their bullpen that so often failed them. With that in mind, let's take a look at two offseason acquisitions who will look to solve the late inning issues and provide depth to the bullpen. Joel Hanrahan, Closer: To say the Red Sox have been anxious to find a replacement for Jonathan Papelbon would be putting it lightly. After injuries derailed Andrew Bailey last year, the Sox weren't going to sit around and hope for a turnaround. Mere hours after the Hanrahan trade became official, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington announced that Hanrahan was brought on to serve as the team's closer. This acquisition and appointment makes a lot of sense for the Sox as Hanrahan has proven to be one of the more stable closers in the National League over the past two years, compiling a 2.24 ERA, 76 saves, and just over one strikeout per inning. He compares favorably to the man he is trying to replace in Papelbon with a mid/high 90's fastball and a wipeout slider that will undoubtedly translate to the AL East. The price to acquire Hanrahan wasn't necessarily all that steep either. While I was a big supporter of acquiring Sands from the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was apparent that with the ongoing signing of Mike Napoli the Red Sox weren't going to commit to Sands anytime soon. Stolmy Pimentel was the other major piece heading to the Pittsburgh Pirates and while he is still young enough to develop, he was not ever going to crack the Red Sox starting rotation. Koji Uehara, Setup: Uehara brings something with him not a lot of relievers can claim--success in the AL East. Since he was converted to the bullpen in 2010 by the Baltimore Orioles, Uehara has been among the league leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (K/9) averaging 11.46 K/9 over that span. His success isn't derived from power, as he relies on an array of pitches and the control to locate them all. Placing him in front of Hanrahan in the 8th inning is going to provide a stark contrast, as he not only throws with less velocity, but features a split finger that drops vertically as opposed to the sweeping east/west movement of Hanrahan's slider. These differences in pitching styles will help keep hitters off balance over the course of a series and a season. The one true concern with Uehara is his lack of success in the postseason. He has pitches a total of four games in the postseason, all for the Texas Rangers, and has surrendered 5 runs in 2.1 innings. While the sample size is limited, it could be an indication of fatigue pitching over a long season (Uehara will be 38 in April). This should be less of a worry for the Red Sox, as they have the bullpen depth between Andrew Bailey, Junichi Tazawa, and Andrew Miller to cover the setup role on days Uehara doesn't need to pitch. All told, these two acquisitions should prove their worth of the course of the 2013 season. While improvement by the team as a whole will likely take more than one season, Hanrahan and Uehara will become plenty appreciated at the back end of the Red Sox bullpen this year.
