The               Boston               Red               Sox               are               not               a               team               that               you               normally               associate               with               rookies.

Perennial               contenders               to               win               the               American               League               East,               the               Red               Sox               usually               rely               on               established,               experienced               players.

But               there               are               still               a               number               of               rookies               that               are               poised               to               make               an               impact               in               2009.

These               are               the               top               5               rookies               that               can               be               expected               to               break               out               for               the               Red               Sox               in               2009:               #1:               Jonathan               Van               Every,               CF
               #2:               Chris               Carter,               1B/OF
               #3:               George               Kattaras,               C
               #4:               Michael               Bowden,               P
               #5:               Junichi               Tazawa,               P
               #1               Boston               Red               Sox               Rookie:               Jonathan               Van               Every               -               Fantasy               Baseball               2009
               Going               into               Spring               Training               the               Boston               Red               Sox               have               set               up               Jacoby               Ellsbury               as               their               starter               in               Center               Field.

He               seems               set,               coming               off               a               .280               batting               average.

However,               in               2007,               Ellsbury               hit               .353.

Is               Ellsbury               in               decline?

If               he               doesn't               pick               back               up               and               get               back               on               his               2007               pace-or               even               if               he               just               gets               injured,               look               for               rookie               Jonathan               Van               Every               to               move               into               the               starting               position.

If               not               in               center               field,               the               depth               chart               also               shows               Van               Every               as               a               backup               in               both               right               and               left               field.
               Jonathan               Van               Every               appeared               in               11               games               for               the               Red               Sox               in               2008.

He               hit               just               .235               with               six               strikeouts               and               zero               home               runs.

In               119               games               at               the               AAA-level,               he               also               only               hit               .263.

However,               while               he               was               there,               he               hit               26               home               runs               in               380               at-bats.

He               has               power,               and               when               the               Red               Sox               need               someone               to               step               up               with               home               runs,               they               will               look               to               Jonathan               Van               Every.

If               Van               Every               continues               in               a               part-time               role,               he               may               still               be               good               for               10               home               runs.

If               someone               else               in               the               outfield               falters,               look               for               Van               Every               to               step               up               and               be               good               for               15-20               home               runs               and               a               .260               batting               average.

               Chris               Carter               is               an               outfielder,               but               the               Red               Sox               have               him               penciled               in               as               a               backup               to               First               Baseman               Kevin               Youkilis.

Now               Youkilis               is               a               solid               player,               finishing               2008               with               a               .312               batting               average,               29               home               runs,               and               115               RBIs.

He's               been               solid,               and               the               Red               Sox               want               him               to               play               every               day.

But               if               Youke               slips,               or               if               he               gets               injured,               Chris               Carter               is               going               to               be               read               to               step               into               his               shoes.
               In               2008               Chris               Carter               hit               .333               in               9               games               for               the               Red               Sox.

While               at               the               AAA-level,               he               batted               an               even               .300               in               121               games.

He               was               also               good               for               24               home               runs               and               81               RBIs.

The               Red               Sox               would               like               Chris               Carter               to               get               more               playing               time               in               2009,               whether               it's               at               first               base               or               in               the               outfield.

He               likely               won't               be               a               starter               out               of               Spring               Training,               but               he               will               see               action,               at               least               on               a               part-time               basis.

If               there's               injuries,               Carter               is               first               in               line               to               take               over.

He               should               have               at               least               10-12               home               runs               for               the               Red               Sox               in               2009               and               will               be               at               least               .290.
               #3               Boston               Red               Sox               Rookie:               George               Kottaras               -               Fantasy               Baseball               2009
               Heading               into               Spring               Training,               Josh               Bard               is               listed               as               the               Red               Sox's               starting               catcher.

But               he               batted               only               .202               in               2008               and               finished               the               year               batting               only               .136               in               his               last               10               games.

George               Kottaras               is               ready               to               step               in               and               challenge               Bard,               and               could               be               the               starter               coming               out               of               Spring               Training.

Kottaras               only               hit               .200               for               the               Red               Sox               in               2008,               but               he               only               had               5               at-bats               in               3               games.

At               the               AAA-level,               Kottaras               was               another               person,               batting               .243               with               an               impressive               22               home               runs.
               Look               for               Kottaras               to               put               the               pressure               on               and               move               up               in               Spring               Training.

If               he               comes               out               as               the               starting               catcher,               expect               him               to               spend               most               of               the               year               behind               the               plate,               solidifying               that               position               for               the               Red               Sox               for               years               to               come.

In               2009               he               should               bat               near               .250               and               should               give               the               Red               Sox               an               additional               20               home               runs               from               a               low               spot               in               the               batting               order.
               #4               Boston               Red               Sox               Rookie:               Michael               Bowden               -               Fantasy               Baseball               2009
               Michael               Bowden               started               one               game               for               the               Boston               Red               Sox               in               August,               2008.

He               made               it               through               five               innings               and               gave               up               two               hits               and               two               earned               runs               (3.60               ERA).

He               walked               one               and               struck               out               three.

That's               an               impressive               Major               League               debut               for               any               pitcher,               but               especially               for               one               with               an               0-3               record               at               the               AAA-level.

He               did               pitch               40               innings               there               with               a               3.38               ERA,               however.

He               was               much               more               impressive               at               the               AA-level               in               2008,               going               9-4               in               19               games               with               a               2.33               ERA               and               101               strikeouts               in               104               innings.
               While               the               Boston               Red               Sox               certainly               have               some               big               names               in               their               pitching               lineup               for               2009,               watch               for               Michael               Bowden               to               make               an               impact               early,               especially               if               he               can               keep               up               his               control.

Look               for               him               to               become               a               regular               #5               starter               and               if               there's               injuries,               he               could               quickly               move               up               in               the               rotation.

He               should               get               10               wins               this               season,               more               if               he               moves               up               in               the               rotation               during               Spring               Training.

Either               way,               he               should               also               have               at               least               80               strikeouts               this               in               2009.

               Junichi               Tazawa               is               the               real               wild-card               on               this               list.

The               Boston               Red               Sox               don't               really               know               what               they're               getting,               either.

Junichi               Tazawa               has               no               professional               baseball               experience               at               all.

He               is               just               22               years               old               and               has               only               played               amateur               baseball.

However,               at               the               baseball               world               cup               in               Taiwan,               he               threw               a               fastball               at               97               mph,               which               was               apparently               all               the               Red               Sox               needed               to               sign               him.
               Going               into               Spring               Training,               Junichi               Tazawa               will               have               to               pitch               well               to               make               the               team.

It               is               expected               he               will               make               the               team,               and               may               start               out               as               the               Red               Sox               long               reliever               or               spot               starter.

If               he               can               continue               to               throw               97               mph,               look               for               him               to               get               8-10               wins,               more               if               other               starters               start               showing               up               with               injuries.

Throughout               his               amateur               baseball               time,               he               has               consistently               thrown               an               average               of               over               one               strikeout               an               inning,               so               he               should               also               be               good               for               at               least               50               strikeouts               this               year,               perhaps               many               more.
